About Living Techie

Updated on

Living Techie is an independent buying-guide site about garage door openers. We help homeowners pick an opener that fits their door, their ceiling and the way they use the garage.

Most people shop for an opener only once every 10 years or more, often when the old one gets loud or quits. We keep the comparisons plain so you can decide without learning a trade's vocabulary first.

What we cover

Our guides cover belt drive and chain drive openers that hang from the ceiling, wall mount jackshaft openers that sit beside the door, and Wi-Fi app control through systems like myQ and Aladdin Connect.

We also answer the questions that come before a purchase: how much horsepower a door needs, which opener type suits a two-car door, and what a backup battery does during a power cut.

How we work

We read the product details, specs and maker information for every opener we cover. We also look at the patterns in what buyers report after living with one.

Then we turn that research into picks, side-by-side matchups and plain answers. Our How we research page explains the full process.

What we don't do

We don't make or sell garage door openers, and no brand pays us to rank its products.

Living Techie isn't affiliated with Chamberlain, Genie, LiftMaster, Craftsman, Skylink or any other opener maker.

We don't claim to have tested the openers we write about. Every pick comes with the reasons behind it, drawn from specs, features and buyer feedback.

We don't give repair or spring advice. Garage door springs and cables hold heavy loads, so that work belongs to a qualified installer.

How we earn money

Some links on this site go to stores like Amazon. If you buy through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Commissions never decide which openers we recommend. Our affiliate disclosure has the details.
